BRIEF MINUTES OF THE 10/15/08
D4 NEIGHBORHOOD COALITION MEETING
Councilman Brad Winter reported that the City Council is proposing a bill to extend the 1/4 cent Transit tax with the Council recommending how to split the pie and deciding to either have the Council approve or take it to a Public Vote.
At Monday's Council meeting, the Council approved TIDDs for Winrock and Uptown on a 6-3 vote. Concerns are that if too many TIDDs get approved, the result may impact the availability tax monies for city needs.
The City-commissioned report on the feasibility of an Arena and Hotel downtown. The report concludes that the arena and Hotel could be justified. The proposal is for 71 % public and 30 % private financing, with the Governor kicking in $60 Million, which, of course, comes from tax monies also. As noted before, the task force preparing the study was comprised primarily of the organization which had presented the idea to the city. Needless to say, the general comment from D4 members was not complimentary. Unfortunately, Brad will not be attending the next Council meeting as he will be out of town.
Neighborhood discussion focused on the increase in vandalism and theft from homes as well as vehicle theft. It appears that some thefts are well organized as described by a break in to the North of Wilshire in which part of the team went over the wall into the backyard of a home while the rest of the team drove a truck into the driveway facing the garage. The backyard team entered the home from the backyard, took what they wanted, loaded, the truck and they all drove away.
Teams of young adults have also been reported going door-to-door in neighborhoods claiming to be soliciting to sell products. Neighborhoods are warned not to let them into the house and to request that they show their permits.
It was also noted that the trees planted on the median by Kohl's are dying.
