Brief Minutes of the Sept. 17, 2008 D4
                                        Coalition of Neighborhood Association Meeting

The Deputy Director of the Division of Solid Waste, Jill Holbert, presented an overview of the Solid Waste Division plans and activity. The Division handles 251 million tons of solid waste per year, mostly paper. Recycle process results include the conversion of 25 plastic soda bottles to provide material for 1 fleece jacket. The division plans to increase recycle activity substantially by December 2008. Garbage & yard waste are composted. Recycle of aluminum cans saves 95% of the energy required to produce aluminum from ore. There is a paper making recycle plant near Grants. One ton of paper recycled saves 17 trees.

District 4 member Linda du Moulin(sp?), has been appointed to the Alb. City Arts Board. Linda recently won a gold medal from the US Veterans Administration for her art work.

Brad Winter reported that the Committee investigating feasibility of an arena hotel and arena in downtown Albuquerque, presented a favorable report. It was noted, however, that the committee was comprised of individuals with vested interests in such projects. Estimated cost is expected to be in the neighborhood of $ 500 Million, with public funding proposed to come from a 1/8- 1/4 cent tax increase. He discussed the 1/4 cent transportation tax and pointed out that the Council wants the bulk of the moneys to go to roads. The Council is studying a proposed TIDD for the Uptown area and a decision is expected around the last of October.

8:45 PM ( Necessarily left early to avoid conflict with an EPC case to be heard Thursday)

Respectfully submitted
