      EARTH HOUR - Saturday, March 28, 2009

      8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Turn out.  Take action.  

      City Hall, Wells Fargo, the Sierra Club and others want people to turn off the lights for an hour this month to help save energy.  The groups are participating in "Earth Hour" from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009 - the same time that people across the world will be encouraged to turn off devices they don't need.  Supporters say it's a symbolic gesture demonstrating humanity's capacity to conserve energy.

      "We have to change and work together," Mayor Martin Chávez said Thursday at a news conference.

      Wells Fargo will turn off its signature green lights Downtown for the hour. The Sierra Club will distribute energy-efficient light bulbs. And City Hall will power down, except for public-safety functions.  Supporters encourage people to turn off unnecessary lights, televisions and monitors.
